⚠ From 1 August 2022, Hungary applies EU Regulation 2019/1111 (Brussels IIb) for cross-border parental responsibility. International divorces require a lawyer who understands applicable jurisdiction rules — generally not a matter for a provincial solo practitioner.
An uncontested divorce in Hungary where both parties agree costs HUF 180,000–350,000 in lawyer fees and is typically resolved within 3–6 months. A contested cross-border divorce involving children can cost HUF 4,000,000–12,000,000 and take 18–36 months.
Scenario: Married in London, living in Budapest, one child (Hungarian-British dual national). Wife files in Hungary under Ptk. § 4:21.
Jurisdiction question: Under Brussels IIb (EU Reg. 2019/1111), Hungarian courts have jurisdiction as the child habitually resides in Hungary.
UK enforcement: Post-Brexit, Hungarian court orders are not automatically recognised in England & Wales — separate recognition proceedings required.
Lawyer cost (Budapest cross-border specialist): HUF 3,500,000–6,000,000 depending on contested asset division.
Court fees: 6% of disputed asset value (illeték), capped at HUF 1,500,000 per Act XCIII of 1990.
Legal basis: Ptk. §§ 4:21–4:25 (divorce); EU Regulation 2019/1111 (Brussels IIb); 1980 Hague Convention (child abduction); Act LXI of 2011 (Hungarian PIL rules).
